Ethiopia claims it received verification from an US based oil and gas company the Ogaden basin contains 7 trillion cubic feet natural gas and oil reserves.
The estimated reserve during previous studies was around 2 up to 3 trillion.
This is still substantially lower than what Russia produces in a single year that stands at 22 trillion cubic feet in 2020 alone.
To compare, the country closest to Ethiopia, Egypt, has proven reserve of 77 trillion cubic feet.
In addition, Egypt announced in 2020 to have discovered 320 trillion feet natural gas in Eastern Mediterranean.
It needs further study whether the Ogaden basin natural gas reserve is commercially viable to start large scale development such as $4 billion gas pipelines to Djibouti.
